SUMMARY:CANCELED: Calidore String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Its name is a tribute to its original home\, an amalgam of California and doré\, which is French for “golden\,” as in the Golden State. \nWithin two years of its founding at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles\, the Calidore String Quartet won grand prizes in virtually every U.S. chamber music competition (including Coleman)\, and has since performed in major venues throughout North America\, Europe\, and Asia. It is currently in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program. \nCalidore is renowned for its cohesive music-making. “Four more individual musicians are unimaginable\,” the Washington Post observed. “Yet these speak\, breathe\, think\, and feel as one.” \nPROGRAM\n“Schubert in Bohemia” \nDvořák – Quartet No. 12 in F Major\, Op. 96\, “American”\nJanáček – Quartet No. 1\, “Kreutzer Sonata”\nSchubert – Quartet No. 15 in G Major\, Op. 161\, D. 887

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Dover Quartet
DESCRIPTION:As Strings Magazine observed after this “young American string quartet of the moment” (New Yorker) won every prize at the Banff Competition\, received an Avery Fisher Career Grant\, and was named a Cleveland Quartet Award-winner\, the Dover Quartet’s ascent to chamber music’s uppermost firmament has been “practically meteoric.” \nThe Dover Quartet\, whose name pays tribute to Dover Beach by fellow Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber\, is quartet in residence for the Kennedy Center\, Chamber Music Northwest\, Artosphere\, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival\, Peoples’ Symphony in New York\, and the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. \n“With their exceptional interpretative maturity\, tonal refinement\, and taut ensemble\,” Strad concluded\, Dover is “pulling away from their peers.” \nPROGRAM \nHaydn – Quartet No. 61 in D minor\, Op. 76\, No. 2\, “Quinten”\nShostakovich – Quartet No. 8 in C minor\, Op. 110\nDvořák – Quartet No. 13 in G Major\, Op. 106

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Camerata RCO
DESCRIPTION:This performance  has been canceled.\nCaltech\, where our concerts are held\, is postponing or canceling all large public events through Monday\, April 6 that draw large crowds of individuals from outside of the Caltech community to campus. \nThis decision was made out of concern for the health of the community as a social distancing measure in light of COVID-19. \nBox office staff will contact current ticket holders to issue refunds and answer any additional questions beginning Monday\, March 9. \nWe thank you for your patience and understanding. \n\nCamerata RCO is a unique ensemble. \nAll the players are members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam\, and agree that “we enjoy playing in the orchestra tremendously. However\, we like to expand this joy by playing together in a small ensemble as well. Not only is the repertoire of a small ensemble different\, we also feel that chamber music is more personal and intimate. It is refreshing to get to know our colleagues in the orchestra better while working together in Camerata RCO….The energy that results from these concerts is what inspires us most.” \nAudiences are also inspired by “sophisticated\, expressive music making\, with a precision as snug as the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.” (Washington Post) \nPROGRAM \nBeehoven: Septet for strings & woodwinds in E flat major\, Op. 20\nBrahms: Serenade for orchestra No. 1 in D major\, Op. 11 \nTickets are on sale now. \n

SUMMARY:Elias String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Elias String Quartet takes its name from Mendelssohn’s oratorio\, Elijah (Elias is its German form). It was formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. \nIn 2009 the Elias was a recipient of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. With the support of the Trust\, the Quartet mounted “The Beethoven Project” to study and perform all of Beethoven’s string quartets as cycles while sharing the experience through a website and social media. The Project culminated with a cycle of six concerts recorded for Wigmore Hall Live; it became a profound element of the Quartet’s tapestry of music. As The Scotsman wrote\, “From recent years of working through all Beethoven’s quartets\, the Elias have unearthed magical secrets.” \nPROGRAM \nBeethoven: Quartet in G Major\, Op. 18\, No. 2\nBeamish: Quartet No. 3\, “Reed Stanzas”\nMendelssohn\, Felix: Quartet in A minor\, Op. 13 \nView or download the program notes

SUMMARY:Concerto Italiano
DESCRIPTION:Rinaldo Alessanrini founded his ensemble\, Concerto Italiano\, in 1984. Today it is recognized as a unique force in the interpretation of the Baroque music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Of its 2017 Carnegie Hall debut\, Broadway World said “As soon as they started playing…I knew that all was right with the world—or\, at least\, for that moment\, with these musicians\, in this temple of music.” \nThe array of critical awards received for its recordings confirms the outstanding quality of Concerto Italiano’s performances. As Gramophone noted\, “There is perhaps no Baroque group around today that can do the simple and obvious things to such exciting effect.” \nPROGRAM \nCorelli: Sonata a Quattro for Trumpet\, 2 Violins\, and Basso Continuo\, WoO 4\nVivaldi: Trio Sonata for 2 Violins and Basso Continuo in C Major\, RV 60\nMarcello: Cantata for Soprano\, 2 Violins\, and Basso Continuo\nCorelli: Trio Sonata for 2 Violins and Basso Continuo\, Op. 1\, No. 3\nScarlatti\, Alessandro: Su le sponde del Tebro\, Cantata for Soprano\, Trumpet\, 2 Violins\, and Basso Continuo\, H. 705\nHandel: Tu fedel? tu costante? SUMMARY:Jasper String Quartet with Nicholas Phan\, tenor
DESCRIPTION:“The Jaspers…match their sounds perfectly\, as if each swelling chord were coming out of a single\, impossibly well-tuned organ\, instead of four distinct instruments.” —New Haven Advocate \nIn 2008 the Jasper String Quartet won the top prizes at the Coleman\, Plowman\, and Yellow Springs competitions; and a Silver Medal at Fischoff’s competition in 2008 and 2009. The Jaspers soon scaled musical peaks to rival the peaks of their namesake\, Jasper National Park in Canada. More recent peaks include the CMA’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award in 2012 and Fischoff’s 2016 Educator Award. \nA golden thread woven into this program is the golden voice of tenor Nicholas Phan\, hailed by the Boston Globe as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers.” \nPROGRAM \nBeethoven: Quartet in C minor\, Op. 18\, No. 4\nBeethoven: An die ferne Geliebte\, Op. 98\nSchubert: Lieder\n・An die Leier\, D. 737\n・Ganymed\, D. 544\n・Der Zwerg\, D. 771\n・Der Sanger\, D. 149\n・Der Erlkonig\, D. 328\nSchubert: Quartet in D minor\, D. 810\, “Death and the Maiden” \nView or download the program notes

SUMMARY:Emerson String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Like the poet/philosopher after whom it is named\, the Emerson String Quartet has an enduring reputation for artistry—earning nine Grammys\, three Gramophone Awards\, the Avery Fisher Prize\, and Musical America’s “Ensemble of the Year” since its founding in 1976. The Quartet has also contributed to the tapestry of music by commissioning and performing new works from composers such as Thomas Adés\, Kaija Saariaho\, Mark-Anthony Turnage\, and Edgar Meyer. \nEvery performance is itself a multi-hued\, multi-textured tapestry. As the Philadelphia Enquirer noted\, “Few string quartets have regularly displayed such individuality among members—an ideal stance for coloring and differentiating the complex strands of the fugues.” \nPROGRAM \nBeethoven: Quartet in E-flat Major\, Op. 74\, “Harp”\nBeethoven: Quartet in F minor\, Op. 95\, “Serioso”\nBeethoven: Quartet in E-flat Major\, Op. 127 \nView or download the program notes

SUMMARY:Quator Danel
DESCRIPTION:New York’s Grand Central Terminal is renowned for its enormous windows. Few know though\, that there are secret walkways within those windows\, unless they invest in a tour. Coleman is something of a musical central terminal – providing access to one window of wonder after another. This season\, our series finale is a ‘secret’ quartet. Although renowned internationally since its founding in 1991\, Quatuor Danel did not perform in the U.S.  until 2015. \n“It’s a wonder that a veteran chamber music group known throughout Europe doesn’t perform here more often\,” according to DC Metro Theater Arts. As the San Francisco Classical Voice’s reviewer wrote\, “I’d never heard of the ensemble. . .now\, Quatuor Danel might well be my favorite.” \nProgram \n    Beethoven — Quartet in B-flat Major\, Op. 18\, No. 6\n    Shostakovich — Quartet No. 6 in G Major\, Op. 101\n    Weinberg — Quartet No 6 in E minor\, Op. 35 \nView or download the program notes \nTickets are on sale now. \n

SUMMARY:Escher String Quartet with David Speltz\, cello
DESCRIPTION:Like its namesake\, graphic artist M.C. Escher\, the Quartet creates its own “impossible constructions\,” simultaneously showcasing each instrument’s part while melding them into one\, offering audiences unusual views and new perspectives. As The Guardian noted\, the ensemble’s members display “fabulous unanimity\, tonal warmth and care over detail.” \nDavid Speltz \nSeason Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, the Escher String Quartet received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2013. It is String Quartet in Residence at Southern Methodist University in Dallas\, Texas; and Tuesday Musical in Akron\, Ohio. Its performances around the world have earned accolades\, from “stylish and graceful\, with lovely blended tone” (Bachtrack.com) to “superb\, their concentration and stamina especially remarkable.” – The New York Times \nFamily members have often been part of the Coleman Concerts dating back to the 1920s when founder Alice Coleman performed works composed by her sister Sarah. This concert continues the family tradition when cellist David Speltz  joins the Escher Quartet to perform Schubert’s Quintet for Strings in C Major; David’s son\, Brook Speltz\, is the Escher’s cellist. \nDavid Speltz is no stranger to Coleman\, first winning the Coleman Competition’s Vera Barstow Award in 1973 with the Arriaga String Quartet. In 1984\, Mr. Speltz performed on the Coleman concert series as a member of Musical Offering. Father and son will no doubt bring a special energy to this performance. \nMr. Speltz’s connections to Southern California’s classical music scene run deep. SUMMARY:The Pražák Quartet and The Zemlinsky Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Every musical configuration\, be it vocal or instrumental\, choral or symphonic\, chamber or solo\, is a distinctive window of the soul. The string octet is one of the more unusual windows\, and the Pražák and Zemlinsky Quartets are joining together to explore the view. Throughout Coleman’s years\, the Gade octet will be heard by our audiences for the first time\, and the Mendelssohn and Shostakovich octets each for just the third time. \nBoth Quartets are Czech\, and both won the Premier Grand Prix at the Bordeaux International String Competition: the Zemlinsky in 2010\, the Pražák in 1978 (at that time the Evian Competition). Each quartet was founded by students in Prague\, the Pražák in 1972 and the Zemlinsky in 1994. \nPROGRAM \nGade — String Octet in F Major\, Op. 17\nShostakovich — Two Pieces for String Octet\, Op. 11\nMendelssohn — String Octet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 \nView or download the program notes \nSeason subscriptions and individual tickets are on sale now.

SUMMARY:David Finckel & Wu Han
DESCRIPTION:David Finckel and Wu Han “explode on the stage\, exuding not only glamour and theatrical flair but also superb musical insight. The audience’s thrill is twofold” (The Washington Post). \nThe artists present a program they have selected to illuminate the theme of German Mastery. From Beethoven’s incredibly lyrical Opus 69\, composed at the height of the Classical period\, to Brahms’s soulful second sonata\, whose beloved fugue pays homage to Bach\, the master of counterpoint\, the program traverses the German tradition of consummate craftsmanship in artistry. Concluding with Mendelssohn’s exhilarating Opus 58\, which epitomizes the era of German Romanticism\, this thrilling program is a tour de force through some of the most revered treasures of the cello-piano duo literature. \nPROGRAM \nBeethoven — Sonata in A Major for Cello and Piano\, Op. 69\nBrahms — Sonata No. 1 in E minor for Cello and Piano\, Op. 38\nMendelssohn — Sonata No. 2 in D Major for Cello and Piano\, Op. 58 \nView or download the program notes \nSeason subscriptions and individual tickets are on sale now.

SUMMARY:Brentano Quartet with Dawn Upshaw\, soprano
DESCRIPTION:Some musical stories have texts\, and soprano Dawn Upshaw joins the Brentano Quartet to sing them. “You couldn’t tear your eyes away from Upshaw’s presentation as she inhabited the moods and characters of these poetic texts\,” wrote the Cincinnati Enquirer\, “She was an involved storyteller\, bringing meaning to each word of text.” \nThe Brentano Quartet sings with strings\, and is named for Antonie Brentano\, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved.” “These players could well be the best of the latest generation\,” the Philadelphia Inquirer enthused; “Their level of individual technique was superb\, while [the] musical dialog necessary for rich chamber music was evident from first to last.” \nProgram\nMozart — Quartet in C Major\, K. 465\, “Dissonant”\nSchoenberg — Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp minor\, with Soprano\, Op. 10\nBrahms — Quartet No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 51\, No. 1\nRespighi — Il tramonto for Mezzo-soprano and Strings \n \n \nPhoto credits: Juergen Frank (Brentano Quartet); Brooke Irish (Dawn Upshaw)

SUMMARY:Jerusalem Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Storytellers make words speak. They also know that beyond the words they speak\, their delivery is crucial. The Jerusalem Quartet has certainly mastered its delivery. Since 1996\, this Israeli ensemble has been ‘making strings speak’ on prominent concert stages throughout the US and Europe. Its goal\, however\, extends far beyond this: to achieve\, it says\, “perfection of sound.” \nThe Quartet may never achieve this goal\, but it’s certainly getting close. “An absolute triumph\,” says BBC Music Magazine. “Their playing has everything you could possibly wish for.” Perhaps\, though\, the Strad Magazine has expressed it best: “The result is by far the most intrinsically beautiful performance… that I have ever encountered.” \nProgram\nMozart — Quartet in B-flat Major\, K. 458\, “Hunt”\nJanáček — Quartet No. 1\, “Kreutzer Sonata”\nBeethoven — Quartet in F Major\, Op. 135 \n \n \nPhoto credit: Felix Broede

SUMMARY:Schubert Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:In its 34 years\, the Schubert Ensemble has become renowned as a proponent of music for piano and strings. Yes\, the Ensemble’s repertoire includes Schubert\, but it also includes virtually every major work for piano quartet. Among its more than 30 acclaimed CDs the Dvořák disc and the more recent of two Ensecu discs for Chandos were selected as Recording of the Month by BBC Music Magazine. \nGood storytellers seek new tales to expand their repertoire; the Schubert Ensemble has expanded its repertoire by commissioning more than 80 new works. And as Fanfare USA said\, “…The performances by the Schubert Ensemble are exactly what the music requires—they fizzle with energy and pep.” \nProgram\nHummel — Piano Quintet in E-flat Major\, Op. 87\nFauré — Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 15\nSchubert — Piano Quintet in A Major\, Op. 114\, “The Trout”

SUMMARY:St. Lawrence String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Master storytellers are open and authentic. We\, in turn\, open to them; we connect. The St. Lawrence String Quartet is a master\, as noted by Alex Ross of The New Yorker: “The St. Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality of their music making\, exalted as it is\, but for the joy they take in the act of connection.” \nEstablished in Toronto in 1989\, the SLSQ has won numerous awards at international competitions\, and earned Grammy nominations and Juno Awards. The Quartet is also known for its ‘partnership’ with Haydn. Again\, The New Yorker: “No other North American quartet plays the music of Haydn with more intelligence\, expressivity and force…” \nProgram\nHaydn — Quartet in D Major\, Op. 20\, No. 4\nJanáček — Quartet No. 2\, “Intimate Letters”\nTchaikovsky — Quartet No. 3 in E-flat minor\, Op. 30

SUMMARY:Juilliard String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Juilliard String Quartet with Coleman is a story in itself. This will be the Quartet’s 21st appearance\, the first of which took place at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1951. Founded in 1946\, the Quartet recently celebrated its 70th anniversary\, and also welcomed its newest member\, cellist Astrid Schween. In 2011\, the Quartet became the first classical music ensemble to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. \nThe Boston Globe said it best: “The Juilliard String Quartet can plausibly be called the most important American quartet in history…. Some groups seem to wrestle with their past and legacy; the Juilliard seems completely revitalized.” \nProgram\nHaydn — Quartet in D Major\, Op. 76\, No. 5\, “Largo”\nBartók — Quartet No. 5 in B-flat Major\nDvořák — Quartet No. 11 in C Major\, Op. 61

SUMMARY:Heath Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The best storytellers display an infectious passion. And the Heath Quartet—which in 2013 became the first ensemble in 15 years to win the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award— exemplifies this. The ensemble performs\, says The Telegraph\, “with fierce intelligence and feeling\, passion and virtuosity.” \nThe members’ commitment to chamber music has led them far beyond London\, where they are professors of Chamber Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Past tours have included Carnegie Hall\, the Kilkenny Arts Festival\, the BBC Proms\, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam\, Queen’s Hall Edinburgh\, and Lincoln Center. Their 2016 recording of the Tippett quartets on Harmonia Mundi were praised by Gramophone as “A tremendous achievement.” \nProgram\nHaydn — Quartet in D minor\, Op. 76\, No. 2\, “Quinten”\nTippett — Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp Major\nBach — Three Chorale Preludes\nMendelssohn — Quartet No. 6 in F minor\, Op. 80

SUMMARY:Dover Quartet
DESCRIPTION:• DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM FOR THIS CONCERT \nOur musical tour concludes with a visit to Shostakovich’s Russia and a return to Beethoven’s incomparable late quartets—three of which\, including Op. 132\, were commissioned by Prince Nikolai Galitzin in St. Petersburg. He agreed to Beethoven’s requested fee of 50 ducats each… the last two finally paid to Beethoven’s heirs in 1852. \nThe Dover Quartet won not only the Grand Prize but all three Special Prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition. The Quartet also won top prizes at the Fischoff Competition and the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition\, and in 2013 became the Curtis Institute of Music’s inaugural quartet-in-residence. The Chicago Tribune wrote that “the Dover Quartet players have it in them to become the next Guarneri String Quartet—they’re that good.” \nProgram\nShostakovich — Quartet No. 2 in A Major\, Op. 68\nBeethoven — Quartet in A minor\, Op. 132

SUMMARY:Pavel Haas Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Named for the Czech composer\, the Pavel Haas Quartet returns to Coleman to take us to Prague\, where in 1878 Smetana’s Quartet No. 1 was given a private premiere with Antonin Dvoˇrák as violist. The Quartet’s recent recording of this work is one of three nominated in the chamber category for the 2016 BBC Music Magazine Awards. \nThe Quartet’s previous recording (Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” and the String Quintet)\, was named Best Chamber Music Record at the 2014 Gramophone Awards. Gramophone commented: “They represent the best qualities of the Czech tradition—warmth\, sonorousness\, individuality\, intensity; but what’s striking here is their fearless risk-taking\, their fervency and the absolute confidence with which they propel you through these two masterpieces.” \n\nProgram\nMartinů — Quartet No. 3\, H. 183\nSmetana — Quartet No. 1 in E minor\, Op. 116\, “From My Life”

SUMMARY:Pacifica Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Pacifica Quartet may live in Indiana—where they serve as quartet-in-residence at the Jacobs School of Music and as resident performing artists at the nearby University of Chicago—but their accomplishments range far beyond these state’s borders\, including our own Coleman Competition: the Russell Award in 1995 and the 50th Anniversary Prize in 1996. London’s Guardian called them “outstanding;” The New York Times described their playing as “alluring…breathtaking…unfolding with spine-tingling intensity.” \nOur musical journey with the Quartet will include works by Mozart and Beethoven\, and also a quartet by Israeli-American composer Shulamit Ran. Inspired by the paintings of Felix Nussbaum\, who died during the Holocaust\, the work\, Ran explains\, is her way of saying\, “Do not forget.” \nProgram\nMozart — Quartet No. 15 in D minor\, K. 421\nRan — Quartet No. 3\, “Glitter\, Doom\, Shards Memory”\nBeethoven — Quartet in C Major\, Op. 59\, No. 3\, “Rhapsody”

SUMMARY:Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Our musical journey begins with the fourth visit to Coleman audiences by this venerable London-based ensemble\, established in 1967 by the renowned chamber orchestra of the same name in order to perform larger chamber works without relying on guest artists. We will visit Prague\, where Dvořák’s quintet premiered (and earned five ducats in a competition)\, and then travel on to Vienna to hear Schubert’s octet\, which was first performed at the home of Archduke Rudolf of Austria\, to whom Beethoven’s “Archduke Trio” was dedicated. \n“What an awesome octet… Packing the punch of two quartets\, their sound is vivid: bright and highly saturated\,” said Opus One. The Washington Post wrote that “Their sound is sweet and pure\, their ensemble work airtight.” \nProgram\nDvořák — String Quintet No. 2 in G Major\, Op. 77\nSchubert — Octet in F Major for Winds and Strings\, Op. 166\, D. 803 \nDownload the concert program (PDF)

SUMMARY:Enso String Quartet with Clive Greensmith\, Cello
DESCRIPTION:The name Enso is derived from the Japanese Zen painting of the circle\, which represents many things: perfection and imperfection\, the moment of chaos that is creation\, the emptiness of the void\, the endless circle of life\, and the fullness of the spirit. The members of the Enso String Quartet all were drawn to the string quartet repertoire because of its richness and diversity\, and founded the Quartet at Yale University in 1999. The Charleston Daily Mail described a recent concert as “Expertly performed and musically as satisfying as any that I have heard. There is sweet music\, and its name is Enso.” \nGuest artist Clive Greensmith has been principal cellist of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the Tokyo String Quartet. \nProgram\nWolf — Italian Serenade in G Major for String Quartet\nSchulhoff — Five Pieces for String Quartet\nSchubert — String Quintet in C Major\, Op. 163\, D. 956 \n  \n\n
