SUMMARY:Brentano Quartet with Dawn Upshaw\, soprano
DESCRIPTION:Some musical stories have texts\, and soprano Dawn Upshaw joins the Brentano Quartet to sing them. “You couldn’t tear your eyes away from Upshaw’s presentation as she inhabited the moods and characters of these poetic texts\,” wrote the Cincinnati Enquirer\, “She was an involved storyteller\, bringing meaning to each word of text.” \nThe Brentano Quartet sings with strings\, and is named for Antonie Brentano\, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved.” “These players could well be the best of the latest generation\,” the Philadelphia Inquirer enthused; “Their level of individual technique was superb\, while [the] musical dialog necessary for rich chamber music was evident from first to last.” \nProgram\nMozart — Quartet in C Major\, K. 465\, “Dissonant”\nSchoenberg — Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp minor\, with Soprano\, Op. 10\nBrahms — Quartet No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 51\, No. 1\nRespighi — Il tramonto for Mezzo-soprano and Strings \n \n \nPhoto credits: Juergen Frank (Brentano Quartet); Brooke Irish (Dawn Upshaw)

SUMMARY:Jerusalem Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Storytellers make words speak. They also know that beyond the words they speak\, their delivery is crucial. The Jerusalem Quartet has certainly mastered its delivery. Since 1996\, this Israeli ensemble has been ‘making strings speak’ on prominent concert stages throughout the US and Europe. Its goal\, however\, extends far beyond this: to achieve\, it says\, “perfection of sound.” \nThe Quartet may never achieve this goal\, but it’s certainly getting close. “An absolute triumph\,” says BBC Music Magazine. “Their playing has everything you could possibly wish for.” Perhaps\, though\, the Strad Magazine has expressed it best: “The result is by far the most intrinsically beautiful performance… that I have ever encountered.” \nProgram\nMozart — Quartet in B-flat Major\, K. 458\, “Hunt”\nJanáček — Quartet No. 1\, “Kreutzer Sonata”\nBeethoven — Quartet in F Major\, Op. 135 \n \n \nPhoto credit: Felix Broede

SUMMARY:Schubert Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:In its 34 years\, the Schubert Ensemble has become renowned as a proponent of music for piano and strings. Yes\, the Ensemble’s repertoire includes Schubert\, but it also includes virtually every major work for piano quartet. Among its more than 30 acclaimed CDs the Dvořák disc and the more recent of two Ensecu discs for Chandos were selected as Recording of the Month by BBC Music Magazine. \nGood storytellers seek new tales to expand their repertoire; the Schubert Ensemble has expanded its repertoire by commissioning more than 80 new works. And as Fanfare USA said\, “…The performances by the Schubert Ensemble are exactly what the music requires—they fizzle with energy and pep.” \nProgram\nHummel — Piano Quintet in E-flat Major\, Op. 87\nFauré — Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor\, Op. 15\nSchubert — Piano Quintet in A Major\, Op. 114\, “The Trout”

SUMMARY:St. Lawrence String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Master storytellers are open and authentic. We\, in turn\, open to them; we connect. The St. Lawrence String Quartet is a master\, as noted by Alex Ross of The New Yorker: “The St. Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality of their music making\, exalted as it is\, but for the joy they take in the act of connection.” \nEstablished in Toronto in 1989\, the SLSQ has won numerous awards at international competitions\, and earned Grammy nominations and Juno Awards. The Quartet is also known for its ‘partnership’ with Haydn. Again\, The New Yorker: “No other North American quartet plays the music of Haydn with more intelligence\, expressivity and force…” \nProgram\nHaydn — Quartet in D Major\, Op. 20\, No. 4\nJanáček — Quartet No. 2\, “Intimate Letters”\nTchaikovsky — Quartet No. 3 in E-flat minor\, Op. 30

SUMMARY:Juilliard String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Juilliard String Quartet with Coleman is a story in itself. This will be the Quartet’s 21st appearance\, the first of which took place at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1951. Founded in 1946\, the Quartet recently celebrated its 70th anniversary\, and also welcomed its newest member\, cellist Astrid Schween. In 2011\, the Quartet became the first classical music ensemble to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. \nThe Boston Globe said it best: “The Juilliard String Quartet can plausibly be called the most important American quartet in history…. Some groups seem to wrestle with their past and legacy; the Juilliard seems completely revitalized.” \nProgram\nHaydn — Quartet in D Major\, Op. 76\, No. 5\, “Largo”\nBartók — Quartet No. 5 in B-flat Major\nDvořák — Quartet No. 11 in C Major\, Op. 61

SUMMARY:Heath Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The best storytellers display an infectious passion. And the Heath Quartet—which in 2013 became the first ensemble in 15 years to win the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award— exemplifies this. The ensemble performs\, says The Telegraph\, “with fierce intelligence and feeling\, passion and virtuosity.” \nThe members’ commitment to chamber music has led them far beyond London\, where they are professors of Chamber Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Past tours have included Carnegie Hall\, the Kilkenny Arts Festival\, the BBC Proms\, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam\, Queen’s Hall Edinburgh\, and Lincoln Center. Their 2016 recording of the Tippett quartets on Harmonia Mundi were praised by Gramophone as “A tremendous achievement.” \nProgram\nHaydn — Quartet in D minor\, Op. 76\, No. 2\, “Quinten”\nTippett — Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp Major\nBach — Three Chorale Preludes\nMendelssohn — Quartet No. 6 in F minor\, Op. 80
